Johan Sanatana is up for an award this off-season. He is a candidate for the This Year in Baseball's Oddity of the Year award.
The play in which he has been nominated for is the at bat he had against the Cubs back on September 23rd. At bat with a man on first base in the fifth inning, Johan made contact with the pitch, breaking his bat as he sent bouncing up the middle. It scooted Sean Marshall, the Cubs pitcher, possibly hitting the barrel of Santana's bat near the mound. Then it slammed into the barrel by the second-base bag, robbing shortstop Ronny Cedeno of whatever chance he had left to field the ball cleanly.
Said Santana, "It's just lucky, whatever. I don't even know what to call that."
Carlos Beltran is also up for the Play Of The Year Award for his catch of Ryan Ludwick's apparent home-run. Beltran leaped at the wall, glove extended, and robbed Ludwick of the expected round-tripper.
These awards are part of TYIB – This Year In Baseball. According to mlb.com, 'The ballot boxes for the TYIB Awards will close at 11:59 p.m. ET on Monday. In 2007, a record 9.6 million votes were cast for the awards, and that figure could be surpassed this time around as fans weigh in on the year's top hitter, manager and oddity, among others. The results of the voting will be revealed during the week of Dec. 15-19.'
