Mets Should Keep Ramon!

Ramon Castro is making his case to remain a Met. With many of his teammates participating in the WBC, Castro has seen some playing time, and has taken advantage of it.

Yesterday against the Washington Nationals, Castro crushed a three run homer in the fifth inning in the Met loss. The homer was crushed over the 25’ Batters Eye in centerfield of Space Coast Stadium.

Castro’s health has been an issue with him seeing two stints on the DL last year, and has prompted rumors that the Mets are looking to move him, and possibly acquire Ivan Rodriguez. Castro, speaking with the press said, "I feel good. I'm fine. I can stay healthy all year. That's the key - not getting hurt."

I have been a fan of Castro since the Mets acquired him as a free agent from the Marlins on December 22, 2004. He has been a solid defensive catcher, with a quality bat off the bench. Injuries over the last couple of years have hurt the Mets, but when healthy, Castro is among the best back-up catchers in the game.

Another positive Castro brings is his attitude. He is a clown in the clubhouse, and helps to keep his teammates loose. Not enough can be said for such individuals. Last year when Reyes had had a good game, and was being interviewed, Castro came up from behind him, posing as a reporter, and asked Reyes what he thought of the game Castro had had. Reyes at first didn’t realize who was asking the question, but when he did suddenly realize, he broke into laughter. A comfortable atmosphere is very important for a winning club, and Castro, although a back-up, is well liked by his teammates, and adds a quality glove and bat to the Mets one to two times per week.

I would like to see the Mets hold onto Castro, and having such a tight relationship with Omar, I will be sure to pass my thoughts along.

I like Castro too and do not think Pudge would be better then Ramon. I just wish the guy would not become soft so late in the year when he is needed.
