This Was No Willie Spring Training

The Mets finish up Spring Training today against the Orioles. After the game, the team will head north to their new digs, Gil Hodges Memorial Park, where they will play the Red Sox on Friday and Saturday.

General Manuel will play most of his starters in both contests this weekend so that they can get a feel for the dimensions of the new park. Long Island Met Fan and I will be at Saturday’s game, and we are both looking forward to it with child like anticipation.

This Spring Training was different than during the Randolph years. Manuel had his players’ take 80 swings over five minutes, hitting the ball to the opposite field on each hit.

In the clubhouse, he had televisions showing all the opposite field hits in chronological order. He promotes a total team effort.

Mets ace Johan Santana sees a big difference in this club, his second year with the Mets: “Because details, that's what makes a winner. I've seen a lot of improvement from last year."

The starters for Friday and Saturdays’ games against the Red Sox are: Friday Livan Hernandez vs. Jon Lester. Saturday we will see Oliver Perez and John Maine vs. Daisuke Matsuzaka.
