A little Q&A on a day off.

Yesterday during the game Steve Popper who follows the Mets for some New Jersey Papers and has his own blog at Amazing Stories Did a Q&A for us Mets fantatics. The questions below were mostly what I asked except for the first 2.

Will Schneider be cut and we see Josh Thole any time soon?

If you were the GM, would you tender John Maine a contract for 2010 ?

Why is it that Sheff and Franceour can hit homers and the rest of the team cant? Do you think Hojo has done more harm then good?

Schneider won't be cut, but he almost certainly won't be back next year. The Mets like what they've got from Omir Santos this year, but would like to pair him again with someone a little higher level - which is unlikely given the payroll constraints.

But Thole is still a longshot - he's got very little experience at catcher and while his hitting has caught eyes within the organization, he needs more work.

That's a real tough question. The Mets like Maine, like his arm and especially his toughness. But he's lost two seasons here now, has done little to prove himself a reliable starter.
He's arbitration eligible again I believe and the Mets may be hesitant to tender him a contract - instead waiting to see if they can let him go the free agency route and sign him for less.

The most basic reason that no outside of Sheffield and Francoeur hit home runs is that there are few home run hitters on this team.

David Wright remains a puzzle that greater minds than me can't figure out. But the rest of the lineup is mostly punch-hitters and veterans who might be over the hill. Dan Murphy has begun to pull the ball a little better, so he might add a little pop.

Hojo has got to take some heat for the numbers, but more than Hojo blame the injuries. If Beltran, Reyes and Delgado were healthy there would be more home runs. Not to mention more wins.

Why has Pelfrey taking a step back this year and why is he afraid to pitch inside?

Pelfrey has confounded the Mets this year. They were sure he was ready to take a step forward and he really has gone back again.
Earlier I noted the Mets like Maine's toughness - but so far Pelfrey doesn't have that intangible of being able to fight through tough situations.
They love his talent, but still see him unable to utilize it.

Any shot will the Mets bring up Ike Davis this September? He his doing pretty well for binghamton...

Davis has played better as the year has worn on but if he is here it's just for a look - no one thinks he's ready.
The thing is, there are few players who anyone wants to see up here. Eddie Kunz figures to get a call-up. Pat Misch, too.
Then figure Nick Evans and maybe Argenis Reyes.
Getting excited about the future yet?

If Omar stays, do you think he will adapt to a style of thinking that sometimes its better to have 3-4 players that hit 10-20 homers then 1-2 that hits 30-35?I mean some teams lineup have 5-6 players with at least 10 homers...
The Mets never seem to have any pop off the bench since 06 besides Castro and Tatis .

It can't make Mets fans happy, but I think the Yanks have seven players with at least 15 homers this year. The Mets have - well, none.
The Mets would like home run hitters of any sort right now. They are excited about the addition of Francoeur but what would really help is Beltran and Reyes back and Wright finding his power again.
Minaya has always maintained that he like speed and defense, but his roster has never reflected that.
