How Do You Like This Idea?
From what I've been hearing and reading, which has been a lot, Mets fans are getting fed-up with the entire Jason Bay soap opera. I am too, as you well know from my posts of late ( 24 Hours...12/24/2009 & 24 Hours...12/20/2009 ) .
What about this: the Mets yank Bay's offer, and sign Rick Ankiel to play LF. Granted, he isn't right handed, but he does have some pop and is a very good defensive outfielder. He would cost less money than Bay or Holliday, and with that extra money saved, they can focus on pitching, catching, and bench players.
Ankiel you might remember was a good young pitcher for the Cardinals back in 2000, when he suddenly developed Steve Blass Disease . His professional career quickly spun out of control, and he left the game after the 2001 season. He did return to the Cards (2004), as a minor league outfielder. He worked very hard, and made his way back to the Bigs. To have the onions and intestinal fortitude to fight his way back means he has guts. Guts this team has been lacking for quite some time.
I believe the Mets could get away with a two year deal for Ankiel. I don't think it would cost them more than $4M, but with Scott Boras as his agent...
What do you think? Might Ankiel be an inexpensive answer for the Mets LF hole?
