Mets Clubhouse Manager Charlie Samuels May Be Linked To Betting On Baseball

In more updated Charlie Samuels news, The Daily News is reporting that not only did Samuels, as we reported (below), bet on horses and football, but there is a suspicion he also bet on baseball, using an "organized gambling ring."

Other allegations are that he used money from a Mets checking account to pay off debts. Money was usually repaid within a few weeks. It is unknown if there is any money that wasn't paid back.

He is also suspected of taking bats and other Mets paraphernalia and selling it, as well as placing bets for others from work.

As I stated last night, I am concerned that once the bricks start falling out of the Charlie Samuels foundation, will Met players be linked to placing bets with him?

The Daily News has an update of the Charlie Samuels suspension.
The News is reporting that Samuels is under Federal investigation for illegal gambling

Samuels was known to an avid gambler, mainly on football and the horses. It is not believed that he bet on baseball.

Charlie Samuels

Samuels, who has been Mets Clubhouse Manager for 27 years, was the one responsible for hiring Kirk Radomski, who was brought up on Federal charges for distributing PED's. It is not believed Samuels was involved in that.

My concern in all this is if any of the Mets players were involved in Samuels gambling, and if he was such a gambler, whose to say he didn't bet on baseball? I have a feeling this is only the beginning.

Adam Rubin Tweets in that Samuels was suspended "indefinitely" last Wednesday. Rubin continues with the short statement from the Mets:

"Last Wednesday, the Mets suspended Charlie Samuels indefinitely without pay. As this is an ongoing personnel matter, we have no further comment."

In a tweet from
David Lennon we learn that Mets long time club house manager Charlie Samuels has been suspended. The suspension will be "indefinitely" due to" personal" reasons.

This comes on the heels of
letting scouts go on Tuesday. Tuesday he relieved both Bob Johnson and Russ Bove of their duties. On the same day it was announced that Razor Shines would not return. That decision was most likely made prior to the hiring of Alderson.

Alderson and the Mets picked up Jose Reyes' option for 2011. The fleet footed shortstop will earn $11M for the season. The Mets will look to extend his contract, but don't expect that anytime soon.
