Should I Stay Or Should I Go Now?

Should I stay or should I go now?

If I go there will be trouble

And if I stay it will be double

So you gotta let me know

Should I stay or should I go?
~ The Clash ~

Is this song being hummed in the corporate offices of Citigroup? How about in the inner sanctum of the NY Mets?

With the huge TARP (Troubled Asset Relief Program) money provided to Citi by the Federal Government, more pressure is starting to mount for the Mets and Citi to make a split, allowing Citigroup to walk away from the 20 Year $400 million contract for naming rights.

It is obscene that this corporation has laid off 50,000 people, but yet seek financial assistance from the Federal Government. Then, looks to honor a contract with the Mets.

In today’s
Reuters, it is reported that Citigroup is using $36.5 billion to boost lending. Of course, this $36.5 billion is all from tax payer money

According to Walter Todd, portfolio manager at Greenwood Capital Associates,
"The government is the invisible hand at Citigroup now. You have to believe that on big strategic decisions, they are having an influence."

Metsfan73 has never wanted a corporate sponsored ballpark (see
here, here and here). The Mets need to embrace their history. The Wilpon’s are in love with Jackie Robinson, and understandably so, but if they really want to give proper respect to their organization and history, there is only one name possible for this ball park…Gil Hodges Memorial Park.

Companies the size of Citigroup have and need substantial marketing and advertising budgets, and I would venture to guess that these budgets are larger than what CIti is forking over to the Mets. As a tax payer, I want this company to succeed. Advertising is a strong component. If your arguement is sponsoring the Met's new stadium is a poor choice of advertising, well then you might have a case. But you may want to think first before taking that position. Unfortunately, professional sports today is a serious business, with serious dollars needed. And for the Mets to compete, they need to have the cash. - NC Giants Fan
